Callister officially puts his name in the ring to be Isle of Man's next Chief Minister

Onchan MHK Rob Callister is the first Tynwald member to publicly announce his intention to stand for the role of Chief Minister.

He says he is canvassing for support but if doesn‘t get the backing of at least five or six members by 5pm on Monday he will withdraw from the contest.

Candidates for Chief Minister must publish their policy proposals by next Tuesday (October 6).

A week later, on October 13, the House of Keys will meet to nominate the next Chief Minister. A candidate needs the support of at least 13 MHKs.

Mr Callister won a third term representing the Onchan constituency in last week’s general election, picking up 1,103 votes to secure the second seat behind new candidate Rachel Glover on 1,245 votes.

His manifesto for the top job in Manx politics is entitled: ‘Our Island, Our Future, Our Responsibility: A Manx government that delivers’

He said: ‘Several highly capable members have been identified as potential candidates for this important role. I have no doubt that whoever is elected will play a significant role in shaping the future of our island over the next five years.

‘After careful reflection, I have decided to put my name forward because I believe I can offer a positive, inclusive and delivery-focused approach to government.

‘As I begin my third term as an MHK, I do so recognising that I was not a member of the Council of Ministers at the end of the last administration. This allows me to present a manifesto that reflects both continuity where progress has been made and change where the electorate has clearly indicated it is needed.

‘The question before us is not simply who should become Chief Minister, but what kind of government we want to build together?

‘The challenges ahead, including housing, healthcare, economic growth, public service reform and infrastructure, will require clear priorities, sound decision-making and a commitment to working collectively in the national interest.’

Mr Callister said his manifesto sets out the principles, priorities and leadership style he would bring to the role.

‘At its heart is a commitment to open and accountable government, responsible financial management, collective decision-making and effective delivery,’ he said.

‘I strongly believe the next administration should make full use of the knowledge, expertise and experience that exists across Tynwald.’
