Police are appealing for witnesses and video footage after a fire at a disused building in Douglas caused significant damage.

The Isle of Man Constabulary said a joint investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the blaze at Sea Court, on Victoria Road, on Sunday evening (October 11).

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service said crews were mobilised at 9.33pm following reports of a building well alight, with the first appliance arriving within five minutes.

More than 45 Fire and Rescue Service personnel were involved in tackling the blaze and maintaining emergency cover elsewhere on the island.

The fire was largely extinguished by 10.51pm, but crews remained at the scene until 2.03am on Monday to complete damping-down operations and personnel decontamination.

Fire officers said the cause had not yet been established and they were keeping an open mind as investigations continued.

Police have now confirmed the building sustained significant damage and is considered ‘structurally unsafe’.

Members of the public are being urged not to enter the property or approach the site because of the safety risk.
