Residents are being urged to remain vigilant after reports of tradespeople calling at homes across the Isle of Man offering work.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has issued a warning following concerns that some traders visiting properties may not have the necessary authority to work on the island, while others could be attempting to obtain money through unlawful or misleading practices.

Police have reminded residents not to feel pressured into accepting work offered unexpectedly and to take steps to protect themselves, their homes and vulnerable neighbours.

The advice includes always asking for identification and verifying who they are speaking to, while residents are warned not to allow anyone into their home if they arrive without an appointment.

It comes as islanders prepare to head to the polls in September’s General Election, with candidates expected to begin stepping up their campaigns and making their case to voters on the doorstep.

People are also being advised not to deal with traders who arrive uninvited offering work, not to agree to unnecessary repairs or improvements under pressure, and not to pay large amounts of money upfront.

The Constabulary said many traders involved in such activity may be non-residents who stay on the island only briefly, potentially making them harder to trace.

Concerns can also be reported to Police Headquarters on 01624 631212.

The force is also encouraging residents to share the warning with friends, family members and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to this type of scam.

It said a quick conversation, phone call or message could help prevent someone becoming a victim, particularly those who may not use social media and could otherwise miss the advice.
