There have been only two prosecutions for fly tipping or dropping litter in the past five years.

The low figure was revealed by Attorney General John Quinn in Tynwald.

Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown and Malew) asked him to give a breakdown of prosecutions for fly-tipping, littering and illegal disposal of items.

Mr Quinn said fly tipping and littering were covered by the same law.

’In the last five years there have been two prosecutions, one in 2017 where a fine of £50 was imposed and another in 2018 where a fine of £100 was imposed,’ he said.

But he said the figure could be ’lower than might be expected’ because police officers or local authorities could issue spot fines of up to £50.

Illegal disposal of items was covered by the Public Health Act, Mr Quinn added.

’No proceedings have been brought over the last five years,’ he said.
