An Isle of Man agricultural haulage business says it will have to increase prices from November after facing higher shipping and fuel costs.

J W Kneen and Son Ltd, based in Bride, said the increases would affect feed prices, container work, livestock transport and general haulage from November 1.

The company said the fuel surcharge it had been quoted for bringing a trailer over on the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company had risen from £62 to £209, plus VAT.

The Steam Packet have been asked to comment.

It also pointed to a 16p-per-litre increase in road fuel prices at the beginning of October, saying it could no longer absorb the additional costs as a small business.

In a post on social media, the company said: ‘As a small business we can’t absorb these costs.

‘So as from the 1st November all feed prices will be going up, as well as any container work or livestock work and general haulage.”

The business said it had held its prices throughout October but would have to pass on some of the increased costs to customers.

It also called on newly elected MHKs to consider the Steam Packet’s fuel surcharge, warning that the impact would extend beyond the farming industry.

The post said: ‘As it’s not just farmers that will suffer, it is anything that is shipped.’

The company, which provides agricultural haulage and Hiab services using crane-equipped lorries, thanked customers for their continued support.

It added: ‘Many will say the joys of living on an island.’

The announcement comes as island businesses face the additional costs associated with transporting goods to and from the Isle of Man.

The Steam Packet’s freight fuel surcharge is reviewed quarterly to reflect changes in fuel costs, with the company’s charges subject to agreement and audit by the Isle of Man Government.

J W Kneen and Son Ltd said the new prices would take effect on November 1.
