One of the island’s most popular fundraising events takes place at this weekend.
The Tower of Refuge walk takes place for the eighth time on Saturday (August 31) to raise money for the RNLI - an appropriate beneficiary as the monument was originally created to shelter shipwrecked sailors.
Douglas Town Centre Management is the walk organiser and Royal National Lifeboat Institution members will be there with collecting tins.
Town centre manager, Oliver Cheshire, said: ’The Tower of Refuge continues to exert a huge fascination, so much so that that the walk regularly attracts more than 3,000 people every year.
’We’re very grateful to Tower Insurance for their support once again and also to the Douglas Coastguard team without whom this event simply couldn’t take place.
’We hope that the weather will be kind, although I advise everyone taking part to wrap up warm as it’s always colder out there than you’d expect and, of course, walkers need to wear suitable footwear.’
The escorted walk is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and instructions from the coastguards and stewards followed.
Walk sponsor is Tower Insurance, whose managing director, Emmet McQuillan, said: ’Tower Insurance is pleased to be continuing its support of what is one of the island’s largest community events, one which helps to lend visibility to the selfless and dedicated work of the RNLI.’ Subject to weather and tidal conditions, the walk will start between 5.50pm and 6pm.
Access will be via the sets of steps along Loch Promenade, with the exception of those opposite Jaks.
