The island’s Scout commissioner has made an appeal to members of the community to come forward and support a worthy organisation.

The Isle of Man Scouting Association has about 800 members around the island and it offers young people a host of exciting activities, from abseiling and climbing to kayaking, archery, axe throwing and camping.

But it also still has a waiting list of around 100 anxious youngsters eager to get involved and enjoy the fun.

Commissioner Guy Thompson said: ’We cater for people aged from six to 18 and we do have about 300 adult volunteers but many of those are in other roles such as skills instructors and parent helpers.

’But what we are really short of is adult leaders.

’So anyone who has something to offer us is most welcome.

’Full training is given.’

Flexibility is big advantage for anyone thinking about getting involved and lending their support, Mr Thompson said.

’Really it’s flexible volunteering so if someone can come once a week that’s fine but if they can only commit to once a month, that’s fine too.’

At the moment, there are 13 Scout groups island-wide, including six Explorer units catering for the older children in the 14 to 18 age group.

’These days we do have some competition but what scouting has to offer is an exciting programme with many adventurous activities, so anyone who wants to get involved would be most welcome,’ Mr Thompson said.

’Everyone who runs sessions is qualified often with national qualifications and we can train adults to do these roles.’

The Scouts also owns its own one-and-a-half-acre camp site and has a new outdoor climbing wall, built with help from the Manx Lottery Trust.

’Really there are fantastic opportunities for the adult volunteers as well as the children,’ he said.

Helpers are needed island-wide, but particularly in Castletown where Mr Thompson would like to start a Beaver colony for six-year-olds.
