Young adults are being given the chance to question House of Keys candidates directly at a special pre-election event.

The ‘Nature - Who Cares?’ event will take place at University College Isle of Man (UCM) this Wednesday, September 16, from 5.30pm.

Organised by Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) and hosted by UCM, it is aimed at people aged between 16 and 25.

Organisers say the politically neutral event will give young adults an opportunity to hear from candidates, put questions to them and discuss issues that could shape the island’s future.

Topics could include housing, the cost of living, transport, energy, food security, public health and community spaces, as well as nature and environmental issues.

However, attendees will be able to question candidates on any subject that matters to them.

Graham Makepeace-Warne, chief executive officer of MWT, said: ‘Young adults will live longest with the consequences of the decisions made over the next parliamentary term, so it is important that they have opportunities to engage directly with the people seeking election.

‘This event is not about telling people what to think or how they should vote.

‘It is about creating an opportunity for young adults to ask questions, hear different perspectives and engage directly with candidates.

‘We want to encourage informed debate and help ensure that young people's voices are part of the conversation about the future of our Biosphere.’

MWT education officer Tiphaine Claveau added: ‘The event is a chance for young people to ask questions, challenge ideas and make their voice heard.

‘Young people care deeply about the Isle of Man and they have their say in its future.’

Organisers stressed the event is not intended to promote any political party, candidate or policy position.

The free event will run from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and is open to people aged 16 to 25.
