Chris Thomas has been elected the Isle of Man’s new Chief Minister, defeating Kirrie Jenkins in a vote at the House of Keys on Tuesday, October 13.

Mr Thomas secured 16 votes to Mrs Jenkins’ six, with two votes ruled invalid. He succeeds Alfred Cannan, who held the role for five years.

The contest followed weeks of discussion about the island’s future, with housing, public services, economic growth and restoring public trust among the key issues.

Mrs Jenkins, the newly elected MHK for Arbory, Castletown and Malew, could have made history as the island’s first female Chief Minister and the first newly elected MHK to take the top job.

Now, attention turns to Mr Thomas’s Council of Ministers and what the new administration will mean for the island.
