Two stalwarts of Isle of Man athletics were recognised at the England Athletics North West Regional Volunteer Awards in Preston last Friday.
Raymond Cox of Manx Harriers and Richie Stevenson of Manx Fell Runners both received Unsung Hero of the Year awards.
It is hard to think of two more deserving recipients.
Ray has provided outstanding leadership and stability to athletics in the island for many years, most recently stepping forward as chairman of the Isle of Man Athletics Association during a period of significant change.
But his contribution goes far beyond his formal roles. He continues to be involved in organising and delivering a huge range of athletics competitions and community sporting events, from IoMAA and Manx Harriers events to the Parish Walk, where he has served as race director for more than 30 years.
That represents an extraordinary amount of time, commitment and voluntary work given to the sport and to the island. Much of it happens quietly behind the scenes, but it is a huge part of what keeps athletics in the Isle of Man thriving.
Richie's contribution is equally remarkable. He has given more than 50 years to fell running in the Isle of Man – as a competitor, race organiser, volunteer and chairman of Manx Fell Runners.
He has played a major role in developing both participation and events, perhaps most notably the Manx Mountain Marathon, which has grown from a relatively small gathering into a major event attracting hundreds of competitors.
Five decades of involvement in a sport he clearly loves is an achievement in itself, but the lasting legacy of his work in helping to develop fell running in the island makes this recognition especially fitting.
Many congratulations to Ray and Richie on their hugely well-deserved awards.
