Isle of Man cricketer Lucy Barnett has been named as the ICC Women's Player of the Month for August.

The 19-year-old picked up the accolade for the first time after starring in the recent Women’s Continental Cup in Romania.

Barnett shone as she helped the Manx side reach the competition's final at Moara Vlasiei Cricket Ground, finishing the tournament as the leading run-scorer.

The Manx teenager kicked off her campaign in style with an unbeaten 71 against Romania in the opening game, helping the Isle of Man successfully complete their run chase in only 13.1 overs.

After a tough game against Greece in which she scored only four runs, she responded brilliantly against Norway by smashing an unbeaten 123 from 64 balls to help her side finish top of the group.

She also made an impact with the ball in those two matches, taking one wicket for only eight runs in the latter contest and one for 11 against in the opener.

Barnett continued her impressive form in the final against Turkey, leading the scoring for the island with a return of 59 from 34 balls to help the Isle of Man set a target of 117 for 8.

In reply, their opponents kept chipping away and, despite Jo Hicks and Barnett taking two wickets apiece, it was Turkey who reached 118 for 5 after 15 overs to claim the trophy.

Overall though, across four T20Is, Barnett amassed 257 runs at an exceptional average of 128.50 and a strike rate of 178.47, as well as claiming four wickets at an economy rate of 3.80 and an average of 14.25.

These performances led to her being named as MVP and a nomination for the ICC Women's Player of the Month where she went up against Thai duo Suleeporn Laomi and Nannapat Koncharoenkai who both impressed for their nation in the recent Asia Cup.

And it was the Isle of Man player who was announced as the winner on Thursday morning.

Reacting to the news, a delighted Barnett said: 'Winning the ICC Player of the Month award is an incredible feeling and, honestly, still feels a little unbelievable as I am making history of sorts for the Isle of Man.

'I knew I had a strong month, but to be recognised ahead of so many others is something I’m immensely proud of and will cherish for a very long time.

'It’s a fantastic time for women’s cricket, and to have the spotlight on me now is a truly special feeling.

'I’m grateful to the ICC for this honour and to all my team-mates, coaches and officials who have made my international journey such an enjoyable and rewarding one.

'This award gives me even more motivation to keep pushing myself, and I hope to carry this form into the matches ahead and create many more special moments for my team.'
