Isle of Man youngsters made their mark on the world stage at Youth Sailing World Championships in Germany recently.

Three talented sailors from the island have returned home with an impressive collection of results — and a coveted world title.

Jimmy Cope, Teddy Dunn and Archie Dunn represented the Manx Youth Sailing Squad, Isle of Man Yacht Club and Great Britain at the RS Sailing Dinghy Youth World Championships in Travemünde.

The trio were among a fleet of 945 sailors from 29 nations competing in the RS Games which proved to be a demanding week of high-wind racing on the Baltic Sea.

With rough conditions and some dramatic survival racing, the challenging weather played to the strengths of the Manx sailors, whose experience of sailing in the often-testing waters around the Isle of Man stood them in good stead.

Jimmy, aged 14, competed in the RS Tera Pro, while Teddy, 21, and Archie, 19, raced the larger RS Aero 5.

The Tera fleet was first on the water, beginning four days of racing on the Saturday. After eight races, with one discard, Jimmy finished an excellent 30th in an extremely competitive international fleet.

Teddy and Archie began their Aero campaign on the following Monday, with the championship decided over 14 races, including two discards.

Teddy made an immediate impression, winning the very first race. Having only just graduated from Exeter University with a first-class honours degree in sports science, he swapped his mortar board for a buoyancy aid and quickly showed that he was equally at home on the water.

He went on to record several top-10 finishes, as well as another race victory, maintaining a strong challenge throughout the week against some of the finest young sailors in the world.

Archie also produced a commendable performance, consistently finishing in the early 30s.

As the week progressed, the Baltic winds finally began to ease and the final day of the competition brought lighter and much shiftier wind conditions.

This meant that even a single change in wind direction could transform the leaderboard and send a leading sailor tumbling as far as 20th place.

After an exceptionally tough week of racing, Friday brought the moment the Manx team had been working towards as Teddy was crowned RS Aero 5 Youth World Champion, bringing the highly sought-after trophy back to the Isle of Man.

Archie completed the championship in a very respectable 32nd place, rounding off a strong performance from both brothers.

For Jimmy, Teddy and Archie, the championships provided an opportunity to compete against the very best young sailors from around the globe and their performances demonstrated that the skills developed through sailing around the Isle of Man can stand up to the toughest international competition.

The trophy is now safely back on Manx soil - a fitting reward for a remarkable week in the Baltic.
