The Boxing Day festive rugby games all went ahead as planned despite the attentions of Storm Bella and a tidy sum was raised for charity in the process.
At Poulsom Park in the south of the island, the Chris Scott Memorial game saw a Castletown Captain’s XV beat a President’s XV 38-27.
Kyle Martin ran in a hat-trick for the captain’s side, while Jim Emmett crossed over twice and there was also a try from Connor Coulthard, with two conversions each for both Messrs Emmett and Martin.
Amid allegations of cheating and general unsportsmanlike conduct, the president’s XV ran in five tries. Alex Gibson picked up two with one each for Jack Goodwin, Chris Horton and Peter Martin, with Harry Goodwin converting one.
The game raised £100 each for Hospice Isle of Man and the Encephalitis Society which Castletown promote via their team shirts.
l At the Field of Dreams, Southern Nomads split into under and over-30 teams, with the youngsters coming out on top 36-29.
Josh Smith did all the damage for the Unders with a personal four-try tally, while Kyle Davies and Keiran Maddrell also scored, with Harry Swayne converting three.
Harry Brereton’s brace led the Overs’ scoring, with Andy Lean, Gaz Watt and Mark Young also crossing. Messrs Young and Watt also added a conversion apiece.
l At Ballafletcher, the Young Farmers claimed a 56-12 (ish) win in the Paul Clelland Memorial game against Vagabonds.
Conor Goodall, Callum Clague, Aaron Curphey and Brandon Atchison all crossed for the Farmers in the first half, building up a 26-7 half-time lead.
Atchison also scored for Vagabonds in the first half with it being his Paul Clelland debut and having to play for both teams as a result.
In the second half, Vagas hit back with a try from Colin Crooks who was also making his Paul Clelland debut at the tender age of 47 after a long lay-off from rugby.
But the Farmers added to their total with a further Atchison score plus tries from Liam Kirkpatrick and Matty Meechan who was drafted in for his cow-handling skills.
After the game, Jim Nicholson got down to the serious stuff and his efforts yielded £1,033 from the clubhouse crowd plus there were also two generous and anonymous donors first making the total up to £1,500 and finally to £2,000.
This total will be carried forward to the Front Row Challenge Match at Ramsey this Saturday, January 2.
The Ramsey money will be added in and the total then split between the Hyperbaric Chamber and the ’My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’ which is promoted by former Scotland and British Lions player Doddie Weir and supports motor neurone disease.
