The Curraghs Wildlife Park has announced the death of its male tapir, Zeus, following a short illness.

In a statement, the park said Zeus had developed colic and died despite efforts by its veterinary and animal care teams to treat him.

The park said: ‘Our teams worked hard to give him the care and treatment he needed, and we are all saddened by his loss.’

Zeus was described as a much-loved member of the park’s animal family and will be missed by those who cared for him.

His mother, Louka, remains at the park and can usually be seen in the area near the trains and play areas.

The park has also confirmed that the paddock beside the jumping pillow, where Zeus lived, will remain empty for the time being.

It said this was while it worked towards securing the funding needed for the area’s maintenance and future development.

‘Losing an animal is always difficult, both for the people who care for them every day and for those of you who have come to know them during your visits,’ the park said.

It thanked visitors for their understanding and anticipated messages of support, adding: ‘Rest peacefully, Zeus.’
