The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 24, to elect 24 Members of the House of Keys for the next five-year term.

Each of the Island’s 12 constituencies will elect two MHKs, with nine candidates standing in Garff.

Here is a look at the candidates hoping to secure one of the two seats in the constituency.

* Anthony Allen - Independent

Anthony Allen is an independent candidate and current chair of Onchan District Commissioners, where he has served on the board for 10 years. He was formerly a director at Laxey Flour Mill and has also worked for the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

He says his connection to Garff is 'deep and genuine', citing his business relationships and knowledge of the communities and local concerns. His priorities include the Mooir Vannin offshore wind farm proposal, the economy, and health and social care.

* Sean Bostrom - Independent

Sean Bostrom is standing for the first time after 28 years as a firefighter. He says he wants to continue serving the island in a different way, with improving communication between government departments and other stakeholders among his aims.

His priorities include incentives to encourage young people to remain on the Island, financial support for childcare, and improving public services including physical and mental healthcare.

* Daphne Caine - Independent

Daphne Caine, one of Garff's sitting MHKs, is seeking a third term after first being elected in 2016. She is currently Education, Sport and Culture Minister and says her focus remains on education, health and housing.

She has also highlighted the economy, environment, heritage and culture, with her three stated priorities being the economy, environment and inequalities.

* Aishlinn Creer - Independent

Aishlinn Creer is standing as an independent candidate in her first General Election. She is currently vice-chair of Garff Commissioners, having joined in 2021, and is on a career break from her previous role as an executive assistant.

She says Garff deserves 'a stronger voice in Tynwald', with healthcare, government spending, transparency and accountability and the Mooir Vannin proposal among her priorities.

* Nigel Dunmore - Independent

Nigel Dunmore is standing as an independent candidate in both Garff and Ramsey. His priorities include reducing the overhead of public services, welcoming business and economic growth, and supporting young people and families.

* Richard Henthorn - Independent

Richard Henthorn, chair of Garff Commissioners, is also making his first bid for the House of Keys. He has more than 30 years' experience in business, community and volunteer groups in the constituency.

With the Mooir Vannin application process among his main concerns, Mr Henthorn wants it stopped until there has been a full Tynwald and public debate. He has also called for accountability, honesty and clarity from the next administration.

* Vicki Hewison - Independent

Vicki Hewison, a Laxey businesswoman and campaigner, is standing for the first time. During the pandemic she created and ran Laxey Lifeline with volunteers, while she has also campaigned against the closure of the Cummal Mooar Older Persons Complex in Ramsey.

She opposes the current Mooir Vannin plans and wants to challenge the proposed Garff Regional Wastewater Treatment Scheme. Her wider priorities include the economy, community services and restoring trust in government.

* Peter Kermeen - Independent

Peter Kermeen is an independent candidate and part-time farmer and full-time gardener. The Maughold resident is standing for election for the first time, with his priorities being simplifying the Civil Service, education and ensuring sustainable governance.

* Martyn Perkins - Independent

Martyn Perkins, a retired mechanical engineer, previously represented Garff in the House of Keys from 2016 to 2021 and is seeking a return as an independent.

He says he is concerned about what he describes as an increasingly 'disconnected and authoritarian' administration and wants greater scrutiny of the structure and function of government.

His priorities are the economy, government accountability and the health service.
