The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 24, to elect 24 Members of the House of Keys for the next five-year term.

Each of the Island’s 12 constituencies will elect two MHKs, with seven candidates standing in Douglas North.

Here is a look at the candidates hoping to secure one of the two seats in the constituency.

* David Ashford - Independent

David Ashford, one of the constituency's sitting MHKs, is seeking another term having first been elected in 2016. He is currently Cabinet Office Minister and is standing as an independent.

He says housing pressures, strains on health and social care, rising living costs and frustration over access to public services have influenced his decision to stand again.

His priorities include 'getting the basics right' through dependable core public services, better value for public money and clearer accountability, alongside increasing affordable and social housing, supporting first-time buyers and reforming planning.

*Jason Cheetham - Independent

Jason Cheetham is standing for the first time. He owns a small tax accountancy firm and says greater government accountability would be central to his work as an MHK.

He argues that commitments have repeatedly been made without meaningful action and says politicians and government should be 'wholly open and accountable for everything they do'.

His priorities are government spending, controlled immigration that meets the Island's needs without becoming a burden, and a sustainable future covering energy, the environment, security and lifestyle.

*Damian Ciappelli - Independent

Damian Ciappelli is an independent candidate and chair of the Positive Action Group. He says he wants to use his experience to 'give something back' to the Island.

His campaign focuses on growing the economy, tackling government overspending, improving healthcare, addressing the housing crisis and connectivity, while ensuring young people can build a future on the island.

*Denis Staunton - Change

Denis Staunton is standing for the new Change party. He owns Paparazzi restaurant and is campaigning alongside the party's wider policies, which include what it describes as 'ending mass immigration', abolishing the Council of Ministers and replacing the Legislative Council with a publicly elected 'People's House'.

*Janet Thommeny - Independent

Janet Thommeny is an independent candidate making her first bid for the House of Keys, having previously spent 10 years as a Douglas City Councillor.

The retired mental health professional has identified immigration, opportunities for young people and housing as her three main priorities.

*Peter Washington - Manx Labour Party

Peter Washington is standing for the Manx Labour Party after serving as a Douglas City Councillor since 2021. A retired paramedic who spent 21 years working in the UK, he is currently chair of the council's Housing Committee.

Having lived in social housing himself for much of his time in the island, Mr Washington has made housing a central part of his campaign, alongside education and health.

He says his experience representing residents over the past five years would provide a foundation for his work as an MHK and pledges to remain 'a strong voice for Douglas North'.

* Hugo Yates - Independent

Hugo Yates, an independent candidate, works as a manager overseeing part of the IT infrastructure for a multinational financial corporation. He moved to the Isle of Man 20 years ago and says he wants to deliver 'real freedom', borders that work for the island and an open and honest government.
