The coastguard was called out to rescue a trapped dog at the Sound - in what they called a ’totally avoidable incident’.

Police also criticised the number of people who ignored the stay at home advice.

Port Erin’s coastguard rescue team was called out on Sunday after a Collie fell down a narrow gully at the Calf Sound.

Two rope rescue specialists descended into the chasm and recovered the dog which was returned to its owner none the worse for wear after its ordeal.

The coastguard said it was particularly technical rescue due to the narrowness of the gully and the difficult access.

A coastguard spokesman said: ’We would appeal to all dog owners to ensure they walk their dog on a lead in coastal locations.

’These types of incidents are totally avoidable and this is even more important at the moment.

’All of us enjoy the island’s fantastic coastline and remote country tracks with their stunning views, however we should be adhering to government advice to "Stay At Home" and only take exercise from our homes.

’Help us to help you by saving us from responding to avoidable incidents at this time. We need to ensure we are available when required to deal with serious incidents.’

Police said they attended the Sound yesterday after people looked at the Sound webcam reported there were a large number of vehicles there.
