The fire service is asking people to take extra care because the prolonged spell of dry weather means that fires are more likely to break out and spread.

It comes after they spent four hours on Wednesday dealing with a large heathland fire in the centre of the island.

Thirty fire fighters were called to Greeba Mountain.

Three major appliances, two Pinzgauer off-road appliances, a water bowser, a Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture tractor with cutter were used and three DEFA officers attended.

About four acres of heathland was affected with crews trying to stop the fire spreading against light winds pushing the fire quickly down the hillside.

A fire service spokesman said: ’Crews were in attendance for four hours working into the dark.

’The ground remains incredibly dry, the fire remains deep in the ground and the terrain prevents access to hose in places.

’We would like to thank DEFA officers for their invaluable help. We again urge the public to be extra vigilant during this dry spell.’

A crew remained on scene through the night dealing with hot spots and ensuring that the fire did not re-ignite.

The fire service is concerned about barbecues.

A spokesman said: ’Please take extra care if you decide to have a barbecue (which should only be at home and only with members of your household).

’Disposable barbecues should always be disposed of in a responsible manner.

’Do not put in your bin until completely cool.

’Do not place directly onto grass or any other surface that can burn easy. Put on a concrete slab if you can.’

He added: ’The ground is tinder dry at the moment please take extra care so there is no extra burden on our emergency services.

’Please also be aware of your neighbours. Covid-19 affects the respiratory system and any additional smoke in the environment may exacerbate the symptoms of those suffering from the virus.’
