A man from Bride has been convicted of dangerous driving and possessing £3,280-worth of cannabis with intent to supply.

James Anthony McKenzie, of Lambhill, was also found to have an axe under the seat of his car when he was arrested, a court heard last week.

In all, the 28-year-old admitted dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possessing an offensive weapon, possessing criminal property, namely £650 in cash, failing to stop for police, and having no vehicle licence.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that police saw McKenzie driving a Citroen C4 on the Ramsey to Laxey coast road on June 6 at 5.35pm.

A witness had reported McKenzie’s driving as ’swerving all over the road’.

Police attempted to stop McKenzie near Dhoon Glen but he ignored an officer on foot who made efforts to flag him down.

driving

A witness reported seeing him driving at 60mph in a 50mph zone.

McKenzie was later found parked at Glen View flats car park in Laxey.

He was spoken to by police and said: ’I’ve got some green, which is for personal use.’

A search of his Citroen found an axe under the driver’s seat.

When interviewed McKenzie handed in a prepared statement denying driving dangerously and saying that he used the axe to chop wood and for work as he was a plasterer.

He claimed that the £650 cash found in his possession was from plastering work and said that when the officer had tried to stop him he had thought he had been signalling to a caravan on the road behind him.

The cannabis found was said to be in two packages weighing 81.8 grams and 82.2 grams.

Mr Robinson said that the drug-related and weapon offences and the dangerous driving should go to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes agreed and McKenzie will appear at the higher court on July 1.

offences

The failure to stop and vehicle licence offences will also be committed so that all the offences can stay together.

Bail continues in the sum of £500 with a curfew between 10pm and 6am and a condition not to drive.
