A banned motorist who was more than twice the drink-drive limit ran from police after abandoning his car a court has heard.

Gavin George Oates, of Dreeym Ollay, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 96 - the legal limit is 35.

A court this week heard that he was disqualified from driving in 2011 for 12 months with an order to retake his test but had not done so.

He pleaded guilty to the drink-driving offence as well as driving while disqualified and having no insurance and will be sentenced on April 7 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court that police saw Oates, 28, driving a Ford Focus on Bowring Road in Ramsey on February 16 at 1.30am. They followed him onto North Shore Road before he turned into a lane.

He was then seen stumbling from the car and running off.

Police gave chase and followed him into a disused building where they found Oates stood in a corner with his arms raised.

He was taken to police headquarters where he failed a breathalyser test with the reading 96.

When interviewed he handed in a prepared statement admitting the offences.

Defence advocate David Clegg submitted that the case was suitable to remain in summary court given that his client had not driven during the actual period of disqualification.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that the probation report consider all options including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions that Oates reside at his home address, contact probation and not leave the island without court consent.
