A drink-driver from Laxey has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for two years.

Daniel Shelton, of Muir Terrace, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 61. The legal limit is 35.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police saw Shelton driving a Peugeot Boxer van on Peel Road on December 7 at 2.35am.

They stopped him after concerns over the manner of his driving and he was said to be smelling of alcohol and unsteady on his feet.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was subsequently arrested.

At police headquarters Shelton failed a further test, with the reading of 61.

Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough said: ’As often is the case with individuals like this they have led a law-abiding life and simply can’t explain why they’ve made this stupid decision to drive as opposed to getting in a taxi.’

Ms Myerscough said that Shelton worked unsociable hours in the hospitality industry.

’He understands he is either going to be walking, getting the bus, or cycling now,’ said the advocate.

’He has let himself and his family down by making a stupid decision.

’All he can do is regret what he has done and extend his apologies.’

Magistrates also ordered Shelton to pay £125 prosecution costs. He will pay at a rate of £100 per month.
