The volunteer crew of Peel RNLI had an early call this morning to rescue a yacht in stormy weather.

At 7am this morning, the volunteers were paged to reports of a vessel with two people on board that had run aground in Peel bay.

On arrival it was found that a visiting yacht had dragged its anchor and was being smashed against the groyne.

It is believed the yacht and its passengers were from France and plan to continue their onward journey to Brittany.

A statement from Peel RNLI said: ’The Peel lifeboat Ruby Clery was launched as well as tasking Castletown coastguard to attend with the breaches bouy.

’Team members in dry suits stood by in case of casualties being washed overboard.

’In high onshore winds and swell a tow line was attached and the yacht was pulled into deeper water.

’Once the yacht was along side the breakwater Peel team took the two sailors back to station to check for injuries and for them to dry off and warm up with tea and biscuits.

’A great result for all involved in a incident with life threatening conditions.’

The hull of the yacht hadn’t been breached and no water was taken on.
