David Lee McGill, of Elm Avenue, was arrested after abusing police outside Jaks bar on Loch Promenade but would give only them a false name.
The court heard how, on June 17 at 12.55am, McGill, who is 37, was said to have been seen shouting at police and making a ’V’ sign at them outside Bordello wine bar on Loch Promenade.
He was spoken to but then pretended to scratch his head with his middle finger in a thinly-veiled abusive gesture towards police and called them ’idiots’.
Police warned McGill about his behaviour but allowed him to leave.
He then got into a taxi but made another ’V’ sign and shouted at police again as the car pulled away.
Police followed the taxi which stopped outside Jaks with McGill getting out.
He was spoken to again but started swearing at police telling them to pay for his taxi.
When asked for his name McGill would give them only a false name.
He then started squaring up to one officer, continuing to swear and call the police ’scumbags’.
He was subsequently arrested and after caution said: ’I’m not guilty.’
Defending McGill in court his advocate Roger Kane said: ’This is a case of Mr McGill simply having too much to drink and acting like a complete idiot.
’He can offer no real recollection due to being intoxicated. He is a family man with five children. There is a caution in 2013 which involved him falling over at a bus stop, but I would submit this can be treated as out of character and as a one-off.
’This has been a lesson and I think the court can be confident he won’t be here again.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’You were given an opportunity to walk away but spent a night in a cell because of your actions.
’You were acting like an idiot and an 11-year-old rather than a 37-year-old man with children.’
