A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you precious time to escape.

You should have smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home. A working smoke alarm will allow you to get out, stay out and dial 999 if you are ever unlucky enough to have a fire.

It’s crucial that smoke alarms are tested regularly preferably once a week. Please like and follow the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Facebook page for Test It Tuesday reminders.

Funding for smoke detectors for vulnerable members of the community has been supplied for the third year by Tower Insurance.

A total of 160 detectors have been bought with support from the Douglas-based company to allow firefighters and the community safety team to protect the homes of people in need of extra support.

Chief fire officer Kevin Groom said: ’The Isle of Man fire and rescue service is grateful for the continued support from Tower Insurance, the provision of domestic smoke alarms enables the service to promote its key aim of preventing fires through its work across our community.’

Richard Hulme, from Tower Insurance, said: ’Tower Insurance is honoured to be assisting this worthy and potentially life-saving initiative. For 90 years Tower has not only been providing insurance products for the Isle of Man, but assisting with community projects such as this one, as they go hand-in-hand with our industry - working towards risk reduction and safety.’
