A high-profile inmate this week admitted two assaults on prison officers.

Donovan Bradley Kitching appeared in court and pleaded guilty to punching two different prisoner officers on two separate occasions.

He will be sentenced on March 20.

Before being brought into court an application by the prosecutor was granted for Kitching to be handcuffed while in the dock.

Kitching, aged 33, is currently serving a 10-year sentence after he admitted causing the death of Gwen Valentine, who was walking in the countryside, by dangerous driving in April 2014.

We previously reported how that sentence was extended by four months after Kitching punched a prison officer in March last year.

Speaking about the Kitching’s latest assaults prosecutor Barry Swain this week told the Deputy High Bailiff how, on January 17 at 11am, Kitching was being taken back to his cell with one prison officer in front of him and one behind him.

As they were opening his cell Kitching launched an attack punching the officer in front on the jaw causing him to fall to the floor and his glasses to fall off.

Kitching was put to the ground as he swore saying: ’I told you I’d get you. Who do you think you are?’

The officer had to lie on top of Kitching and hold him in a bear hug to restrain him.

The injured officer was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a cut on top of his head, 2cm in length, and pain in his jaw.

He said he believed Kitching had caused the cut with a pen but no pen was ever found.

On February 10 at 10am, Kitching was in the segregation unit when he told prison officers he wanted to make a phone call.

He was spoken to through his cell hatch and told he could make the call. Four officers must be in attendance when he is being moved.

The Deputy High Bailiff heard he was taken to the phone booth but as he was being taken back to his cell he suddenly punched one of the officers on the jaw.

The officer said his vision went blurred and his head was in a daze but he reached forward and grabbed Kitching as he and the other officers put him on the floor before handcuffing him and putting him back in his cell.

He later said that the punch had been ’extremely hard’ and that he had pain in his jaw as well as his knee, hip and leg due to the struggle.

Kitching admits charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault.

The case was adjourned at the request of Kitching’s advocate Deborah Myerscough to allow time for the preparation of a probation report before sentencing.

Donovan Kitching, from St John’s, pleaded guilty in September 2014 to causing the death of Gwen Valentine from Winchester, Hampshire.

She was visiting family when she was struck by a car driven by Mr Kitching on the Tholt-y-Will Road on April 26 that year.

Kitching received eight years for causing death by dangerous driving and two years and 72 days for breaching his licence. The sentences will run consecutively.

The court heard he was under licence, having been released from jail three weeks earlier after serving a sentence for burglary.

After he was stopped for drink-driving, Kitching assaulted the police officer and drove away.

He had been in possession of Class A drugs and had fled the scene of the crash to avoid arrest.

Ms Valentine, 62, was preparing for her wedding in June having retired a week earlier.

The mother of three’s fiance and son were both with her when she died.
