Two police officers were spat at by a 23-year-old man, a court heard.

Liam Luke Kaighin, of no fixed abode, spat in the face of one officer with the spittle going in his eye.

Kaighin admitted both police assaults as well as another charge of common assault and one of possessing class ’C’ drugs.

He will be sentenced on October 10 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that police were called to an address at Empire Terrace in Douglas on July 23 at 11.30pm.

They had received a report of Kaighin assaulting a member of the public before running off.

A witness said that Kaighin and another man had been shouting at the victim who was on his phone outside HQ bar and restaurant, in Douglas.

Assault

Kaighin kept shouting that the man had his phone and that he wanted it back.

The man told Kaighin it wasn’t his phone but Kaighin was then said to have tried to get over a fence to get at the man, only failing because he was so drunk.

When he did manage to get to the man he punched him on the back of the neck before making off.

The victim said that he heard the man who was with Kaighin call him ’Liam’.

Kaighin was found by police a short distance away and arrested.

He was said to be agitated and spat in the face of one cop with the spittle hitting him in the eye.

Kaighin was taken to police headquarters and put in a cell but as a police were trying to put a risk suit on him he spat at another cop hitting him on the chest and arm.

He was also found to be in possession of 11 diazepam tablets.

When interviewed later, Kaighin refused to answer any questions.

Mr Kermode asked for a probation report to be prepared.

The court heard that Kaighin is currently subject to a combination order involving a probation order and community service which was imposed in October 2018.

Magistrates ordered that the probation report consider all options, including custody.

No bail application was made and Kaighin was remanded in custody.
