A man who threatened a fellow resident at bail hostel Tromode House has been put on probation for 18 months.

Liam Luke Kaighin, aged 23, of Tromode House, Ballafletcher Road, threatened to slit his victim’s throat after shouting abuse at him.

He admitted an offence of provoking behaviour and was also ordered by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Kaighin handed in a letter of apology via his advocate to Mrs Hughes after he had launched a foul-mouthed tirade against the High Bailiff on his last court appearance when he found out he was not being sentenced on that day.

We previously reported that the provoking behaviour incident at Tromode House took place on January 10.

Police were called to the probation accommodation at 10.30pm after staff said that Kaighin had been causing issues with other residents.

He was said to have abused and threatened one man and was subsequently arrested.

He was then said to have made threats to police. When interviewed at police headquarters he remained silent.

Defence advocate Paul Glover handed in the letter of apology from Kaighin and asked the court to follow the recommendation of a probation report for a probation order to be made.

Mr Glover said his client would likely be seeking reinstatement of his benefits upon his release.

Mrs Hughes said that she had taken into account that Kaighin had served the equivalent of an 11-week sentence while on remand as well as his guilty plea and the recommendation of the probation report.

A 200-hour community service order imposed in October for two counts of assaulting a police officer as well as offences of common assault, resisting arrest, cannabis possession and possession of diazepam remains in place.

Kaighin will pay the costs at a rate of £10 per week.
