A motorist who drink-drove after a work Christmas party has been banned from driving for 30 months.

Grant Granville Elbourne, aged 49, of St Catherine’s Close, Douglas, admitted failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 75 - the legal limit is 35.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how, on December 16 at 1.20am, police saw Elbourne exceeding the speed limit on Victoria Road in Douglas and followed him.

He was also said to be crossing the centre line in the road and was subsequently stopped, failing the breathalyser test.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that Elbourne had been out at a work Christmas party. She said that Elbourne had ordered a taxi, but when it was delayed he had made the ’foolish decision’ to get in his car and drive.

Ms Alexander said: ’He is 49 and has never been in trouble before.

’It is extremely unfortunate he has lost his good character in this manner.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’The police drink-drive campaign is well-publicised.

’You must have been aware of the drink-drive campaign. You’re going to pay a heavy price for your impatience.’

Elbourne was also fined £1,000 and must retake his test at the end of the ban.

Elbourne was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
