A Douglas man has been fined £900 and banned from driving for two years after admitting drink-driving.

Jonathan Edwin McNeill, of Derby Square, was followed and then stopped by police who thought he was acting in an unusual manner.

Prosecutor Michael Jelski told the court how, on April 13, 47-year-old McNeill was seen by police exiting a car park into Lord Street driving a Lexus RX3000.

Police noted that he had applied the brakes when he saw them and thought he was acting in an unusual manner so they followed him.

He was said to be crossing the centre line of the road as he drove and braking for no reason so he was stopped in Derby Square.

Officers reported that McNeill seemed unsure what was going on when they spoke to him and was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was subsequently arrested and taken to police headquarters.

Once there, he failed a further test with a reading of 67 - the legal limit is 35.

Defending McNeill in court his advocate Matthew Wilshaw said that his client has lost his good character by committing the offence.

’He drove a short distance home,’ said the advocate.

’It was Friday evening, the roads were quiet, there was no-one else in the vehicle.

’Losing his licence will cause difficulties with work but he intends to sell the vehicle. He has already handed the keys to someone.

’This is a man who made the foolish decision to drive in a moment of madness.

’He is ashamed of his actions and assures me it won’t be repeated.’

McNeill must retake his test at the end of the ban and pay £125 prosecution costs.

McNeill was given two months to pay the fine and costs with 60 days in default of payment.
