A woman has admitted drink-driving twice in under a month.

Kendra Jane Furness, of Little Meadow, Andreas, committed the second offence while she was on bail for the first.

A bail application was denied by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday and Furness was remanded in custody for a week.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on July 23 at 7.10pm, police on patrol in Ramsey received a report of Furness’s Hyundai being driven erratically in Andreas.

They found her car outside her then boyfriend’s home in Gladstone Avenue in Ramsey.

Officers found Furness, aged 39, in a gap between a fence and a shed.

She was said to be unsteady on her feet and smelling of alcohol.

At police headquarters she failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 167 - the legal limit is 35 - and gave a ’no comment’ interview.

The figure is disputed as Furness said that while she had two ’largish’ glasses of wine before driving, she then consumed a bottle of wine after arriving at the house, before police arrived.

On August 19, at 8.55pm, police again received information about Furness driving her Hyundai in a dangerous manner. A witness who saw her driving followed her and then spoke to her.

Officers went to her home where they found Furness hiding in a cupboard.

At police headquarters she failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 140.

She again gave a ’no comment’ interview.

The second offence meant that Furness had also breached a bail condition not to drive.

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said Furness wasn’t hiding from officers when she was found by the shed on the first occasion.

’She wasn’t hiding, she was retrieving a bicycle with a view to riding home,’ he said

Explaining why Furness had been found hiding in the cupboard on the second occasion, Mr Taylor said Furness’s now ex-boyfriend had been at the address earlier.

The advocate said there may need to be an expert’s report in relation to a back calculation regarding the disputed reading.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday (August 28) for further discussions regarding the reading of 167.
