A pregnant woman from Douglas has been handed a suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer and provoking behaviour.

Stacey Ann Robina Ashton, of Hillside Avenue, admitted both offences and was sentenced to 16 weeks custody for each, to run concurrently, but suspended for 12 months.

The 38-year-old was also banned from licensed premises, and from buying or being sold alcohol for 12 months.

We previously reported that police went to an address in Woodbourne Square on January 16 at 7.10pm to deal with an unrelated matter.

Police heard a voice shout: ’Oi, run quick the police are outside.’

Ashton was then seen stumbling up stairs and was said to be clearly intoxicated.

She started swearing and shouting, despite being told to calm down.

She shouted: ’I will do you,’ at a man who was at the door of one of the flats in the building.

Ashton was arrested and had to be carried down stairs due to her angry state.

Once at police headquarters her rage continued as she faced up to one police officer and pushed them. She then kicked out striking an officer on the leg as her aggression and abuse continued.

She was later released from custody on medical grounds.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said that his client was ’incredibly pregnant’ and due to have the birth induced sometime between June 28 and July 1 so her preference was to be sentenced on the day, without a probation report being compiled.

It was said that Ashton had been to a family funeral on the day of the incident and it was a very highly emotive situation as a result.

Magistrates also ordered Ashton to pay £100 compensation to the police officer she kicked and £50 prosecution costs.

She will pay the compensation and costs at a rate of £10 per week deducted from benefits.
