A man who lashed out at a nurse in Noble’s Hospital’s accident and dmergency department has been sentenced to community service and probation.

Gareth Hargreaves, aged 38, of Ballaquiggin, Santon, was put on probation for 12 months and must do 80 hours’ unpaid work.

He must also pay £250 compensation to a nurse at the hospital.

He admitted threatening behaviour at the hospital.

We previously reported how, on April 1, police were called to the accident and emergency department at the hospital at around 2.40am.

Hargreaves was being restrained on a bed as he screamed and writhed around.

He was said to be bleeding from a head wound and was shouting verbal abuse.

He continued to lash and kick out and police had to put him in handcuffs and leg restraints.

Staff told officers that Hargreaves had swung a clenched fist at one woman member of staff which had resulted in a doctor having to restrain him.

Police had to spend four hours with Hargreaves as they tried to subdue him while he continued to spout verbal abuse, including sexually inappropriate and homophobic comments while lashing out at hospital staff.

Staff told police that they did not believe his behaviour was a result of his head injury and he was later deemed fit to be interviewed.

During a police interview Hargreaves was said to have calmed down and expressed genuine remorse and embarrassment for his behaviour.

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said that his client had had no convictions since 2002.

’He moved to the island to start afresh,’ said the advocate. ’There have been no convictions on the Isle of Man. It was a rare foray into drinking.

’It was the day of his birthday.

’He had a few drinks, he deeply regrets what happened. He has been to the hospital and apologised.’

Hargreaves was also ordered by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to pay £125 prosecution costs.
