A man with a broken leg who was on a crutch was punched in a post-football match fracas.

Painter and decorator James Gerard Maginn, of Oak Avenue, Pulrose, admitted assaulting his victim during a row at a match at Ballacloan stadium in Ramsey on February 23.

The game between Ramsey and Pulrose United ended with chaotic scenes as three people from the same family were involved in a fracas.

We previously reported how Caitlin Marie Maginn, aged 18, also of Oak Avenue, was fined £100 for common assault after she punched a woman after the match.

On that occasion, her father, Robert Patrick Maginn, aged 39, of the same address, was bound over to keep the peace for 12 months after a charge against him of threatening behaviour was withdrawn.

Appearing in court on Thursday, James Maginn, aged 20, who is Robert Maginn’s son, was fined £200 for common assault.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how he had punched a man in the face who was on a crutch during the row after the game, causing swelling and a cut to his victim’s lip.

By the time police arrived at Ballacloan all three Maginns had left but were later arrested.

In a police interview, James Maginn denied assaulting his victim saying that it was self-defence, as the man had raised his crutch to him.

Trouble

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said that his client played football for St Mary’s but had previously played for Pulrose.

’There was abuse coming from the sidelines and he made the erroneous decision to react,’ said the advocate.

’His sister received a fine for a similar incident. He accepts he let the adrenaline of the game get the better of him.’

Magistrates chair Julian Ashcroft said: ’This is a nasty offence.

’We hear of trouble at football matches usually off-island.’

Maginn was fined £200 for common assault and ordered to pay compensation to his victim of £100.

He must also pay £50 prosecution costs and will pay all the amounts at a rate of £40 per week.
