The RNLI has been offered a site at the back of the Fort Anne Jetty to base its future lifeboat house.
As part of the planned redevelopment of Douglas Harbour, the RNLI’s base will need to be moved.
Even if the RNLI didn’t have to move for the proposed works, if it takes delivery of a Shannon class vessel in future years then that boat would not be able to use its current home in Fort Anne Road.
They matter was queried in the House of Keys this week when Martyn Perkins (Garff) sought clarification over whether the RNLI would be in its new home in time for the 200th anniversary of the RNLI in 2024.
The service was founded by Sir William Hillary after he moved to the island.
Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer said the offer had been made following ’extensive discussions’ with the voluntary organisation.
Mr Harmer added: ’My department is now waiting for the RNLI to formulate a proposal in this regard.
’I’m sure that RNLI will be looking to time their development to coincide with their bicentenary celebrations.’
After further questioning from Mr Perkins, the Minister confirmed the DoI is waiting for the RNLI to return with a concrete proposal for the Fort Anne Jetty site.
