A 36-year-old man from Ballabeg has been fined £600 for smashing a pub window with a plant pot after he had drunk 15 pints of lager.

James Lee Carter, of Ronague Road, must also pay £140 to the Central Hotel in Peel for the broken window plus £125 prosecution costs.

He admitted damaging property while a second charge of disorderly behaviour on licensed premises was withdrawn.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, on March 17 at 6pm, Carter was in the Central in Castle Street. Staff told police that he had drunk too much and he was asking for water.

He was seen arguing with a woman in the pub and was asked to leave which he did.

However, Carter later returned and was said to be very aggressive and seemed ’ready to explode’.

Customers in the pub pushed him outside onto the street but Carter then picked up the plant pot and hurled it though the window of the pub.

Police arrived and Carter was said to be shouting and swearing, saying: ’Lock me up then.’

He was arrested and later admitted drinking at least 15 pints of lager, which meant he had little recollection of events.

Defending Carter in court his advocate Ian Kermode said: ’Mr Carter quite simply drank far too much alcohol. He was celebrating St Patrick’s Day watching England and Ireland rugby.

’He has no recollection of the plant pot incident at all.’

Mr Kermode went on to ask for credit to be given for Carter’s immediate guilty plea and for co-operating with police as far as he could bearing in mind he could not recall the incident.

’Mr Carter is a site foreman. In the cold light of day he feels ashamed and embarrassed,’ said the advocate.

’He has asked me to apologise for what went on. The window has been repaired and he is quite content to pay for that.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’You were obviously extremely drunk. You drank 15 pints before 6pm but there has been a slowing down of your offending in recent years.’

Mrs Hughes also banned Carter from entering on-licensed premises and buying or being sold alcohol for three months.
