A teenager from Castletown has been banned from driving and fined £1,250 after admitting driving after smoking cannabis.
Jamie Shaun Robinson, of Arbory Street, also admitted having no insurance or vehicle licence.
The 18-year-old was banned for 18 months with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.
Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on June 22 at 8.15pm, Robinson was seen by police on Foxdale Road in St John’s driving a Peugeot 306 erratically.
He was stopped and police described his eyes as being red and his appearance as ’clammy’. A smell of cannabis was coming from the car and Robinson admitted smoking the drug prior to driving.
A blood test showed 2.2 micrograms per litre of THC in his blood. There is no limit in the Isle of Man but the limit in England and Wales is two micrograms, which can be used for guidance.
Defence advocate Louise Cooil said that her client had immediately admitted everything to police and his interview had only taken six minutes.
Ms Cooil said that Robinson had bought the car to do up and hadn’t been intending to drive it.
But on the night in question he had been asked for help by a friend who was stuck for a lift.
’He has scrapped the vehicle, he is aware he’ll be disqualified today and is learning a significant lesson at a very young age.
’He is employed in Greeba and will have to take two buses to work.
’He is deeply regretful of his actions and understands worse could have happened.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes fined Robinson £900 for driving whilst unfit, £300 for having no insurance, and £50 for having no vehicle licence.
He was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.
