A teenager has been handed a suspended sentence after she kicked a police officer during a struggle at Noble’s Hospital.

Ruby Anna Kennedy, aged 19, of Royal Avenue, in Onchan admitted assaulting a police officer and property damage after tearing a blanket in a police cell.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced her to 16 weeks’ custody, suspended for two years.

She was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to the police officer and £105 for the blanket.

We previously reported that police were called to Chester Street car park on November 23 in relation to a high risk missing person report.

Kennedy was in the car park and was also spoken to by the crisis referral team.

She was taken to hospital but once there became aggressive, swinging her arm at a police woman and grappling with her.

She kicked the officer three or four times while being restrained.

Once deemed fit to release, she was taken to police headquarters where she ripped a police blanket.

Advocate Ian Kermode entered a basis of plea in which Kennedy said she had consumed valium and gin before the incident and could not remember the assault at A & E.

Mr Kermode said: ’Clearly there is a mental health background.’

He added: ’Prior to the police arriving she had consumed gin and valium.

’She acknowledges they were trying to help her and does not remember what happened next.

’She accepts she kicked the police officer three or four times while being restrained on a hospital bed.

’The second offence was a few hours later while she was feeling very upset and agitated.’

Mr Kermode said Kennedy was engaging with Motiv8 and had been asssessed as ’vulnerable’ with long-standing mental health issues. A doctor’s report said custody would risk the deterioration of Kennedy’s mental health.

She was ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
