A 54-year-old man from Greater Manchester has been jailed for 10 weeks after an assault on his then-partner.

Gary Christian, of Three Counties Road, Mossley, Ashton-Under-Lyne, was found guilty after a trial in a court in the Isle of Man.

Christian was said to have kicked the woman in the back with his bare foot and threatened her with an iron and a table during the assault.

Both Christian and the woman were said to have been visiting the island and drinking throughout the day leading up to the incident.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said: ’Mr Christian denies causing her harm or bruising to her but is apologetic for the incident as a whole. He tells me, in a way he still loves her, but she hasn’t responded to his apology.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’This was a domestic violence assault, you were in a relationship at the time and I take into account the vulnerable position your victim found herself in at the time.

’You were visiting the island to visit your friends. She was reliant on you to look after her. You knew she didn’t have any friends on the island that would help her. The offence is aggravated by your over-comsumption of alcohol.

’I accept the injuries were thankfully relatively minor but I can give you no credit for a guilty plea or remorse as you were convicted after trial.

’The writer of the probation report said your victim empathy was somewhat lacking and she got a sense you were not being entirely open with her.’

The court heard that there had been discrepancies with the financial information Christian had provided for legal aid purposes and what he had told probation.

The Deputy High Bailiff added: ’I’m not satisfied you have been entirely honest throughout these proceedings.’

Mrs Hughes ruled out probation, saying that, as Christian still denied committing the offence, it would be difficult to work with him.

Community service was also ruled out as Christian lives in England.
