The police are now using cut-out figures of young children as a tactic.
Cutouts of police officers in high-vis jackets have long been placed by roadsides as traffic calming measures.
The police posted a picture of the cutouts placed on Whitebridge Road on the way out of Onchan, and asked the public what they thought of them as a way of making drivers think about the speed limit in residential areas.
It comes after a group of concerned Onchan residents began campaigning for the speed limit on the main road to be reduced from 30 to 20mph, following numerous near misses between children and cars speeding through the village.
’20mph Main Road Onchan - Keep Our Children Safe’ group Member Clare Gerrard said that it was ’just fabulous to see some action’ but noted that the figures were taken down later, and questioned what the police’s long term objectives were for combatting speeding.
Another member commented that this may have been done by the police after Onchan MHK Julie Edge contacted them on the group’s behalf.
The Facebook group now has more than 300 members, having increased since it received coverage in the Isle of Man Examiner.
More on the Onchan Speeding situation in this week’s Examiner, which is in shops now.
