A large search and rescue operation was mounted in Ramsey Bay after a woman was seen entering the sea.

After two hours, the casualty, who is in her 20s and from Ramsey, was located by the crew of the town’s lifeboat.

Thankfully, she was found safe and well and is now recovering in hospital.

The search operation was launched in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) after police received reports of a woman having entered the sea by the harbour mouth.

Ramsey Lifeboat, Ramsey Coastguard, the island’s Search and Rescue Dog Association and a Coastguard helicopter were mobilised.

The water temperature was about 16 degrees Centigrade and the weather conditions were misty at times which hampered the search.

After two hours of searching the bay, the casualty was located in need of medical treatment by the Ramsey Lifeboat crew.

A police spokesman said: ’The successful recovery of the casualty is a shining example of the testament of the dedication and commitment of the island’s RNLI crews.

’A lot of the searchers also have to be up again at the crack of dawn to go to their day jobs - that’s dedication.’

Ramsey RNLI spokesman Theresa Shammon said: ’We are very happy that we located the person and brought them back to safety. We wish them a speedy recovery.’

The casualty was detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act.
