A woman who kicked and attempted to headbutt officers until she was restrained with Pava spray has been handed a suspended sentence.

Kimberley Cherianne Collister, of Claughbane Avenue, Ramsey, admitted three counts of assaulting a police officer and one of being found drunk in a public place.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced her to 20 weeks in custody, suspended for two years, and banned her from purchasing or being sold alcohol for six months.

Collister, aged 29, was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to each of the three officers.

We previously reported that on November 9, police were called to Woodbourne Road, Douglas, after a report of a fight.

When officers arrived they found Collister who appeared drunk as she was swaying and slurring her words.

While police were there Collister began arguing with another person and then staggered into the middle of the road.

She was arrested due to concerns for her welfare and had to be carried to a police van.

Collister told police she suffered from anxiety so they left the van door open but she then tried to get out and became abusive.

A struggle ensued during which Collister kicked out at police until she had to be restrained using Pava spray.

She was then taken to Noble’s Hospital, accompanied by one officer, but then became abusive towards hospital staff and tried to run off.

Collister then punched one police officer on the arm and tried to headbutt them.

More police officers were called and it took three to restrain her.

Defence advocate Matthew Wilshaw referred to a probation report which described Collister as a ’vulnerable young woman’ who had a serious neurological condition.

The report said that it was highly likely she was suffering from mental health issues at the time of the offences but was also under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication.

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes told Collister: ’Police officers do not deserve treatment such as this from anyone.’

Collister was also ordered to pay £300 prosecution costs.
