It is by far the most bracing of ways to see in the new year.

All around the island, there are a series of new year’s day dips, giving the hardiest of souls the chance to throw themselves into the freezing seas around the island, and to start the year fully refreshed.

The biggest, and the island’s original new year’s day tip, takes place in Peel at midday sharp,

There is still time to register to take part, and his year the dip organisers will be collecting, as usual, for the Peel Lifeboat and Multiple Sclerosis. Joining them will be the this year’s guest charity, the Isle of Man Hyperbaric Chamber.

Signing-on for the dip opens at 11am.

Elsewhere, there are once again four chances to jump into the waters around Port Erin and Port St Mary.

The first takes place at the early time of 10am, at Chapel Beach, followed by 10.45am at the inner harbour, both in Port St Mary.

The brutally-exposed Gansey beach is the next location, at 11.30am, outside the Shore Hotel, and these final dip takes place on Port Erin beach at 12.15am. The Bay Hotel will be on hand with warming drinks afterwards to thaw out.

The Douglas Dippers will take the plunge at 11.30am, with signing on taking place at the Promenade Pavilion opposite the Queen’s Pub from 11am. This year’s dip will again raise funds for Breastcancer Now. Isle of Man.

The Castletown dip, organised by the Castletown Ale Drinkers Society, takes place at 11am in the outer harbour, and up at the other end of the island, The Ramsey dip takes place, again at 11am.

This dip takes place at the Ramsey Lifeboat, with registration opening at 10am.

They will be hoping for a repeat of last year. The 2017 dip attracted 137 people, and raised total of £1628 for both the Bunscoill Rhumsaa and Ramsey RNLI.

Finally, the Laxey New Year’s dip will take place at midday, meeting under the promenade shelter. It will raise money for a muscular dystrophy charity.
