Only 33% of Manx residents have said they believe Covid-19 still poses a high or very high risk to the island.

The latest figures from Island Global Research have updated attitudes towards Covid-19 across the Crown Dependencies.

In Guernsey 26% said it posed a high or very high risk.

At the end of March about 80% of Manx respondents saw the virus as high risk.

Residents are also looking more positive about when life will return to ’normal’ following the Covid-19 pandemic with 49% of respondents believing it will be possible within six months and 77% believed life will be back to how it was within a year.

Again, the optimism of Manx residents is bettered by Guernsey where 84% of residents believe life will return to normal within a year, a testament to the Channel Island’s impressive record of having no new cases in over a month.

Of the Manx respondents, 69% of those polled agreed or strongly agreed with the statement ’the exit strategy that is proposed for my island is the right approach’ with 65% saying the speed of the island’s exit from lockdown is right.

Meanwhile 77% of people said they were comfortable meeting friends and family and 57% said they’d go the shops for non-essential items. However, only 36% said they’d feel comfortable going to cafes and restaurants and 23% said they’d be comfortable going to a bar or nightclub.

Interestingly, when the idea of a inter-island bubble between Jersey and Guernsey - not the Isle of Man - was suggested, 45% of Jersey’s respondents supported the idea. But, perhaps reflecting the difference in the number of cases on the two islands, 60% of Guernsey’s residents said no.

The survey was completed by 1,436 residents of the Crown Dependencies, including 408 Manx residents.
