A new wellness retreat featuring saunas and ice baths is set to open in the centre of Douglas after receiving planning approval.

LJW Enterprise Ltd submitted proposals to transform the Snakepit, between Lord Street and Fort Street, into the new facility.

The project is being led by Tom Rowe, former owner of Secret Pizza in Castletown, and Liam Wiltshire, who runs Kishtey Cheh Sauna in Port Erin.

The plans were unanimously approved by the planning committee on Monday.

Following the decision, Mr Wiltshire welcomed the news in a post on the Kishtey Cheh Sauna Facebook page.

He said: 'I am delighted to say this morning our planning application to bring sauna and ice into the heart of the island's capital has been unanimously approved!

'This is a brand new concept for the island, but one I have seen first-hand in neighbouring cities such as Dublin, London and Cardiff.

'The idea is to turn an underused urban space into a place to escape, get together and improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

'This is a new business partnership between myself and Tom Rowe. We can't wait to get started. It's an ambitious project and one we think will bring so much to the people of Douglas.

'The development incorporates a number of saunas and ice baths, aimed at providing a range of experiences to suit everyone, from quiet sauna sessions and a choice of ice bath temperatures to warm and cold showers and perhaps the island's first sauna rave.

'Work will begin as soon as possible and we will keep you posted throughout the process with updates and news.'

In its planning statement, LJW Enterprise Ltd said the development would revitalise an overlooked site and bring new activity to the area.

It said: 'The plans revitalise an overlooked space with a positive new purpose and increase gentle footfall to the surrounding area.'
