A service to remember those who lost their lives in the Summerland fire will take place this Sunday (August 2) on the 53rd anniversary of the disaster.

It will take place at the Kaye Memorial Garden on Queen’s Promenade, starting at 6.45pm.

Fifty adults and children lost their lives in the blaze at the Summerland entertainment complex on August 2, 1973.

A bid by survivors and their families to press for a fresh inquest to be held was rejected by the high court last week.

The Justice for Summerland group have vowed to continue their campaign and say they will appeal the decision.

Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Steven Crellin JP, will welcome those attending Sunday’s commemoration which is held by Douglas City Council. A short service will then be led by the Mayor's Chaplain, the Rev Michael Brydon.

The memorial provides an opportunity for the community to remember those who lost their lives in 1973. Members of the public are invited to attend the memorial, which serves as a time for reflection and remembrance.

Douglas City Council leader Councillor Devon Watson said: ‘Each year, we come together to honour the memories of those who lost their lives and to acknowledge the lasting impact it has had on survivors, families, and the wider community.

‘This annual service is an important opportunity to reflect, pay our respects and ensure that the memory of those affected continues to be honoured.’

Following the service, the Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of Douglas City Council at the foot of the memorial. Representatives of organisations, families and members of the public will then be invited to lay their own wreaths and floral tributes in memory.

Anyone wishing to attend is asked to arrive no later than 6.35pm to ensure the service can begin promptly.
