Braddan Bridge disabled holiday flats will mark another milestone in a couple of months’ time when the extension is officially opened for business.
The ceremony will be on Mad Sunday during this year’s TT Races and will be carried out by members of Joey Dunlop’s family, according to organisers, but details of exactly who have not yet been released.
To help get ready, the Joey Dunlop Foundation charity that built and runs the accommodation is appealing for volunteer cleaners to lend a hand.
Foundation chairman Kevin Quirk said he would appreciate help from anyone willing to give up some time this Sunday, April 2. Volunteers should contact him on 677741 or 677606 or email [email protected] to find out details.
The flats were officially opened on Mad Sunday in 2010 by 23-times TT winner John McGuinness and Joey’s widow Linda in a ceremony that marked the culmination of 10 years’ fundraising.
Mr Quirk said: ’They have been designed and equipped to provide all-year-round holiday accommodation for people of all ages, with various health issues and needs.’
Following Mad Sunday’s official opening, which takes place at 3pm, an evening celebration is planned courtesy sidecar racer, TT winner and now TT sponsor Klaus Klaffenboch. Tickets cost £40 and are available from Mr Quirk on the numbers given above. Ahead of the opening, Mr Klaffenboch, who is a long-time supporter of the Joey Dunlop Foundation this week visited the house to see the extension.
Mr Quirk added: ’The team of volunteers, our building contractor, Andy Faragher, Manx Gas and DLP have worked extremely hard to achieve our dream of additional accommodation being operational by TT 2017. The afternoon grand opening will attract large crowds and the evening event will be a time to celebrate, with several TT stars scheduled to be there.’
Work began on the extension last autumn when World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea dug the first foundations to start the construction work.
