A visiting couple had two of their dreams fulfilled by getting hitched during the TT festival.
Having been together for 20 years and always wanting to watch the world famous motorcycling event, Maddy Sawyer and Richard Young decided to get married in the island this year.
Peel Castle provided a scenic backdrop while the bride and groom from Leominster in Herefordshire said their ’I dos’ on Thursday (June 6).
Fortunately for them, the heavens did not open on their special day - allowing them to catch some of the TT action.
Maddy said: ’We hadn’t been to the TT before and we are big motorcycling fans. Watching the races in the Isle of Man is something we have always wanted to do and so we thought why not get married there at the same time.
’It all really fell into place. We got married at Peel Castle and, because we hadn’t seen any racing, we left our 45 guests and went to Ballacraine.
’There are photos going around of us there wearing our wedding outfits.’
Maddy told the Manx Independent that it wasn’t the first time they had gone viral on the internet.
’Richard proposed at a track day in Spain. That went viral too,’ she said.
Neither had set foot in the Isle of Man until after the wedding had been organised. It was only when they came over to fill in paperwork ahead of the big day that they had their first glimpse of the island.
’We had asked people on websites for recommendations. Just Lee Photography took some stunning photos, Utopia did my hair, we used Platinum Cars and Elaine’s Flowers in Peel - I took it all from recommendations,’ she said.
Maddy was amazed at the support she received, including when she misplaced her wedding bouquet before walking down the aisle and florist Elaine managed to get it to her in time.
Her special TT wedding cake, created by Taylor Made Cakes, not only impressed the couple but has proven a hit on social media.
Elaine Taylor, who designed the three-tiered masterpiece in the flavours of vanilla, chocolate and lemon, said that the original plan was to do a naked cake before the idea of a TT-themed one came up.
She said: ’I did a MGP, Southern 100 and TT wedding cake 18 months ago and showed her photos. She said she likes Bray Hill and Ballaugh Bridge which has a lot of trees around the area. I described to her my idea and she said: "Oh my gosh, I’m going to cry! That sounds perfect!".’
Included on the cake are the signature bright orange racing signs: Bray Hill; Ballaugh Bridge; Sulby Bridge; Gooseneck and Creg ny Baa as well as part of the mountain course.
Black hay bales and black and white kerbs were added to the scenes which were drawn on using edible paint.
Figurines of the couple on their bikes were specially made and delivered from the United States, which stood next to the cake.
’They are a lovely couple and it was nice to do something different and Manx,’ Elaine, from Andreas, added.
