Over the next few weeks, we will be giving a shout out to some of our food heroes who are helping to keep supply chains going for both people and animals.

Boosh Kerruish is a well-known sight at farms around the island and he has probably never been so welcome as he is now, delivering vital supplies of animal feed and fertiliser plus transporting livestock.

He also sources and delivers hay, haylage, straw and silage.

Boosh is contracted to W. F. Leece & Sons, one of several local hauliers who are keeping farms supplied at a time when many farming families are voluntarily self-isolating.

He says farmers have all been sensible during the crisis: ’They are all about keeping calm and carrying on.

’Not one of them says: "I’m going to get an extra three tons this time", and supplies of feed are coming through fine.’

Boosh adds that it’s also very much business as usual on farms around the island: ’They are sewing corn and planting veg just as normal. They’re pretty resilient: they’re not just sitting back and waiting for it to be over.’

Of course his deliveries are now very much governed by social distancing restrictions, especially as some farming families have elderly parents living with them. He now carries hand sanitiser in his cab and says he has never washed his hands so many times.

He says: ’The farmers are all good to stay away from you when you arrive. They are all about common sense prevailing.’
