A former King William’s College student has been named Lawyer of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Matthew Cain, 49, is the youngest son of the late Professor Charles Cain, the former MHK for Ramsey, and Mrs Angela Cain.

He is also the nephew of Deemster William Cain and the grandson of Deemster Arthur Cain.

Cheltenham-based Matthew is a partner with the law firm Wiggin Osborne Fullerlove, Solicitors.

At the recent Citywealth Magic Circle Awards of 2018, Matthew was named as Lawyer of the Year 2018. The prestigious awards, for the Private Client and Wealth Management industry in the UK and further afield, are internationally recognised.

Matthew is a UK tax lawyer and acts for a wide variety of individuals, trustees, private banks and insurance companies.

He has clients based in the Isle of Man, particularly insurance companies and trust and corporate service providers.

Matthew said:‘I am delighted to have received this award. Peer recognition is an important part of any professional’s career.

‘However, this award is not just about me, and the work I do for my clients, it is also an endorsement of the firm as a whole. 'I have worked closely with my partners to create a practice which has strength in depth and accepts only excellence in the service we provide to our clients.’

Matthew puts the award down to, in particular, the role that he and business partner, Stephen Pallister, played in reversing the original proposals from HM Treasury, published in late 2015, for changing the ‘non-dom’ tax rules.

The legislation that was eventually passed, in 2017, was in large part based on the principles Matthew and Stephen set out, in conjunction with other leading private client tax lawyers and accountants.

Matthew told Business News he returns to the island several times a year and this week was visiting his mother.
