A number of Douglas’s largest hotels are up for sale, with three valued at well over £1m.
There are also a number of smaller hotels and guest houses up for sale across the capital. Many of those for sale date back to the island’s tourism peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The highest priced hotel on the market is the Trevelyan on Queen’s Promenade. The business is up for sale for £1.98m with website Zoopla saying the current owner is seeking to retire.
Hilton Smythe, based in the UK, describes the hotel as a ’well-established and very popular hotel business’.
Its website said: ’The business operates all year round with a 24/7 bar licence and generates a turnover in the region of £250,000 per annum, with a gross profit of approximately 60%.’
And added: ’We feel there is scope to increase the turnover by embarking on a modest marketing campaign, to highlight the accommodation offered. A new owner could also introduce evening meals for the guests and maybe the general public.’
The hotel has 67 guest bedrooms on a bed and breakfast only basis. There are a variety of en-suite rooms and rooms with private bathrooms. Standard bedrooms in the hotel feature a desk, bed linen and ironing facilities upon request. Basic rooms include bed linen and ironing facilities upon request.
Victoria Street based estate agent Harmony Homes is also advertising the Savoy Hotel, Bar and Grill on Castlemona Terrace. The hotel is for sale for £1.84m.
Harmony Homes says the business has been run by the current owners for 12 years and received ’extensive refurbishment to the entire hotel, inclusive of all entertainment and communal areas’ in the past three years.
The Savoy has 20 en-suite bedrooms, all with sea views, an executive self contained one bedroom apartment and a three-bedroom owners’ flat.
The other large hotel in Douglas up for sale is The Welbeck, on Mona Drive, which Deanwood is listing for £1.5m. It has been run by the George family for more than 40 years.
Deanwood describes it as: ’This substantial hotel is over five floors and there is an owners comfortable and spacious two-bed apartment which if need be could be reconfigured into further hotel accommodation if required giving extra revenue or an incentive to an in-house manager.’
As well as operating as a successful hotel with 27 en suite bedrooms, the Welbeck also boasts a restaurant and six one bed and one two bed apartments.
Around Douglas, other guest houses and hotels for sale include the Sea View Hotel (£850,000), Sea View Guest House (£525,000), Arrandale (£749,000), Hillcrest (£750,000) and Celtic Corner (£320,000).
The Covid-19 impact on hotels and guest houses has been felt across the tourism industry, despite the success of the ’staycation season’ and tourists who visited the island from Guernsey as part of the air bridge.
